One Chance
One Chance is an adventure story game that puts you in the shoes of scientist John Pilgrim, whose breakthrough cure for cancer has triggered a global catastrophe. In just six days, a deadly virus will wipe out all life on Earth. Each day, you have the same question to answer. Will you spend time with your family, go to the office to find a cure, or take a third option? You only get one shot, so aim to make the right decisions. The Universe depends on it.
How to Play One Chance
Each day, you decide how John spends the last six days on Earth, either frantically working for a cure, spending time with family, or getting tempted by other options like playing hooky from work with colleagues. Your choices lead to one of several endings, and you only get one playthrough unless you restart in incognito mode. That is the thrill of the game! It is literally one chance.
Note: The following sequence follows just one possible path through One Chance. The events, scenes, and endings you encounter will vary based on the choices you make. Your sequence of days may unfold differently, and some moments described here might not appear in your playthrough.
Day 1
You wake in your bedroom. Penny, your wife, reminds you that today is the big day. On the way to work, you read in the newspaper that cancer has been cured. At the lab, colleagues congratulate you for developing E48 K15, a breakthrough treatment already approved for global distribution. The world celebrates.
You can go to work or skip it; your choice sets the tone for the days ahead.
Day 2
The next morning, the paper’s headline changes everything: “CURE DEADLY - Destroys All Living Cells.” The E48 K15 kills not only cancer but all living tissue, and it spreads rapidly, killing plants, animals, and humans. Panic quickly sets in.
Depending on the root you take, stay at work, one colleague takes their own life in despair. You must choose, do you keep working or walk away?
Day 3
This morning’s headline reads “The End Is Nigh.” World leaders admit the virus is unstoppable. Local plants are dying, which is a sign that the pathogen is close. The road to work is trafficked, and the streets are chaotic.
The lab is nearly empty. Your boss tells you to go home, and hope is fading. Your choice is to return home to family or continue working.
Day 4
This morning’s headline reads “50% Dead by Morning.” The death tolls are now soaring, and survivors are few. The lab team begs you to keep trying, and once again, you need to decide whether to spend this day at work or with Penny and Molly.
Day 5
You wake to find Molly standing by your closet. She asks where her mom is, then happily climbs on your back for a piggyback ride. Avoid the bathroom, there’s something inside you don’t want her to see. Her mother has been hit by the virus.
Outside, the streets are silent. No newspaper today. You drive to work, and the game prompts you. You can take Molly to the park for a quiet final outing, or take Molly to work, just another desperate attempt at a cure. If you choose to work, you arrive at the lab and try again, and may fail once more.
Day 6
Today is the final day. If you don’t find a cure now, everyone will die, including you. You are visibly ill, pale, slow, and unsteady. On your way to work, you pick up Molly. The city is eerily empty. Again, you choose:
Go to the park and spend your last moments together, or go to work and take one final shot at saving the world. The choice may result in humanity being saved or you spending your final moments on Earth in a desolate park with your daughter.
It’s your one chance. Make it count.
